Government Grants to reduce your energy bills! “Keep the heat in” was the most common phrase used in our house on winter evenings when I was growing on the family farm. Like many families in the eighties, we were ahead of our time and understood the importance of not wasting heat long before it became fashionable to be “Green”. Keeping the heat in today is more important than ever before, as the price of energy rises due to our dwindling resources of fossil fuels. So what better way to reduce your energy bills than by using home government grant funding to improve your properties Building Energy Rating (BER). The Home Energy Saving ( HES) grant from SEI is well worth looking at if you are thinking about insulating your house or improving your heating system and controls. Normally, you will know if your house has poor insulation when after the heat is turned off in the house, the room becomes noticeably colder within a short period of time. However by adding extra insulation to your walls and attic, this will make a world of a difference to your home comfort and most importantly your pocket. With this in mind, Sustainable Energy Ireland have announced a grant of householders seeking to improve their home heating management. Therefore, if your house is built before 2006 and you are serious thinking of improving your insulation or improving your heating system then you can SEI on 1850 927 000 or simply fill out online or download an application form on the SEI website www.sei.ie/hes.
It is optional to have a Building Energy Rating assessment done as part of the grant process but a grant of €200 is available for this work. If you get a BER done prior to starting work, the independent assessor will tell you what rating your house currently is, where improvements can be made and check you rating after the work is done. The cert you get is valid for 10 years. So if you have not lost all your hard earned cash on Bank shares, helicopters or apartments in Spain, then applying for this grant is a good investment. You will generate much needed work locally, your house will be far more comfortable, it's value goes up and you save money year on year. written by Michael Lyons Future Energy
